There are no mistakes along the way, only lessons. Our growth is a series of trial, error and experimentation. The "unsuccessful" experiments are part of the process just like the experiments that ultimately "work". Lessons are repeated and presented in various ways until they are learned. When we have learned them, we can go on to the next lesson. Learning lessons never stops. There is no part of life that doesn't contain lessons.
Other people are merely our reflections. When you meet someone better than yourself, turn your thoughts to becoming his equal. When you meet someone not as good as you are, look within and examine yourself.
Life is a matter of choice. We have given all the tools and resources we need. We are who we choose to become and we become what we want ourselves to be. Where we are now speaks of the road we chose to travel. Who we are now reflects the decisions we made earlier in our lives.
